ANTISEMITISM AND FREE SPEECH ON CAMPUS:
THE  IMPACT OF THE RECENT EXECUTIVE ORDER ON COMBATTING ANTISEMITISM
With Dr. Sigal Ben Porath

Join us for Havdalah, a brief ceremony that marks the end of Shabbat and the transition to a new week, followed by a presentation and discussion led by Dr. Sigal Ben-Porath, a member of the extended Havurah family.  Dr. Ben-Porath is Professor of Education, Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of Free Speech on Campus (2017, University of Pennsylvania Press), and a nationally known speaker on the topic.
Sigal will outline the issues that the recent executive order on combatting antisemitism, signed at the White House Hannukah party, is meant to address, and the debate it has sparked  in the Jewish community and beyond. While the White House states that the executive order is meant to ensure incidents of anti-Semitism be treated under federal law as vigorously as other forms of discrimination, some have taken issue with whether the executive order defines  Judaism as a race or nationality rather than as a religion, and whether the executive order conflates Judaism with support for the state of Israel and its government policies.
In a time of outrage over anti-Semitic incidents of all kinds across our country, we’ll learn about this piece of policy and the debate it sparks about antisemitism in general, and antisemitism and free speech on college campuses in particular.
